“The Cloud Upon the Sanctuary” by Karl von Eckartshausen is a fundamental work of 18th-century Neoplatonic and Hermetic esotericism. It exerted a decisive influence on movements such as Freemasonry, Rosicrucianism, Theosophy, the Golden Dawn, and Martinism, among others, and is evidently influential in the thought of E. A. Waite, Papus, Rudolf Steiner and many others. In six letters, it addresses the theme of the Invisible Church, which is equally important for understanding not only the historical Order of the Temple but also the branches that emerged from it in the 19th century, particularly under the authority of the Regent Joséphin Péladan (OSMTH).
